Defense was the key once again for the 7th and 8th grade Riverbend Bulldogs in their season finale, as they defeated the Rock Falls Rockets 24-6. Rock Falls managed just one significant drive in the third quarter, with Riverbend’s defense holding them under 100 total yards.
It was one of Riverbend’s toughest games of the year. Rock Falls presented a strong defensive front, applying constant pressure up the middle and making it difficult for the Bulldogs to score. But Riverbend’s more physical team rose to the challenge, delivering hard tackles and forcing Rock Falls to earn every yard. Lucas Huisenga set the tone early with a couple of bone-rattling tackles on the Bulldogs’ first drive.
The Bulldogs’ offense balanced the attack with 167 rushing yards on 17 carries and 79 passing yards. Brantley Easley was a standout, scoring two rushing touchdowns (62 and 38 yards) and returning an interception for a touchdown. Quarterback Mavrick Hamstra also connected with Huisenga for a 29-yard passing touchdown. Hamstra also had an interception from the safety position.
The win capped an undefeated season for the Bulldogs, finishing 6-0. The 8th grade class concludes their middle school careers with a remarkable 28-0 record. Congratulations to the 8th graders and the rest of the Bulldogs on a great season and middle school careers, and best of luck as these young athletes move on to high school football.
